Planning a lifestyle family photo session can be both exciting and a bit daunting. These 5 ways to prepare for your lifestyle family photo session will get you well on your way to success! Unlike traditional portrait sessions, lifestyle photography captures the authentic moments of your family’s everyday life, making it essential to prepare in a way that ensures everyone feels comfortable and natural. Here are five tips to help you get ready for a successful lifestyle family photo session.

1. Choose the Right Location

Selecting a meaningful location sets the tone for your session, and I have a fabulous Location Guide if you’re stuck for ideas!. Think about places where your family spends quality time together—your home, a favorite park, or even a cozy café. The setting should reflect your family’s personality and provide a comfortable environment where everyone can be themselves. Sometimes it’s super fun to discover a new spot! If that’s what you’d like to do, we can choose a location based on your family’s preferences. Is your favorite place a beach? How about I take you to *my* favorite beach and we document your family discovering a new favorite place together!

2. Plan Your Outfits

Coordinate outfits without being too matchy-matchy. Aim for complementary colors and patterns that reflect your family’s style. Comfort is key, so choose clothing that allows everyone to move freely. Layers and textures can add visual interest, but avoid large logos or overly bright colors that might distract from the natural feel of the photos.
I am here to hold your hand every step of the way with styling your clothing! From making a color swatch to work from, to checking links before you order, I can use my expertise to guide you into what will photograph well, with remaining authentic. I lifestyle photography, we want to stay true to YOU. Would you wear a fancy evening gown to the beach? If yes, then let’s do it! If no, let’s work on finding something that is truly “beachy” and truly wow!

3. Prepare Your Home

If you’re shooting at home, do a quick tidy-up, but don’t stress about making everything perfect. Focus on areas where you’ll be spending most of your time, such as the living room, kitchen, or backyard. A lived-in look adds authenticity and charm to your photos. Remove any obvious clutter or “mess” but keep personal items that add character and tell your family’s story.

4. Think About Activities

Plan a few simple activities that your family enjoys. Whether it’s baking cookies, playing board games, or having a picnic, these activities will help everyone relax and interact naturally. Activities also provide opportunities for candid moments and genuine expressions, making your photos feel more authentic. Many times our locations are super interactive, with tidepools, tree trunks, rocks, sand, or any number of things to keep kids busy. If that’s the case, the “activity” will unfold naturally!

5. Communicate with Your Photographer

One of the most valuable things I offer my clients is a pre-session video call. I know we’re all super busy, but there is great value in seeing each other face to face (especially for kids!) before the session. We can break the ice and foster the familiarity that will allow you to be comfortable in front of my camera! Share your vision and any specific ideas with me during this time. Discuss your family’s dynamics, favorite activities, and any special moments you want to capture. I will use this information to tailor the session to your family’s unique story, ensuring a more personalized and meaningful experience.

By following these 5 ways to prepare for your lifestyle family photo session, you’ll be well-prepared to create beautiful, candid memories that truly reflect the essence of your family. Enjoy the session and let your family’s natural connection shine through!
