Do you do Maternity Sessions at your studio?
Since my studio is specialized for Newborns (and babies under 1 year old) I do not do other sessions at the studio. Maternity and other sessions are held on location (at your favorite spot, or I have some I can suggest) at *any* time of the year! Snow is fun! I love to embrace and celebrate the seasons that usher in a brand new little person.
How old are newborns when their photos are taken?
Newborns are 5-10 days old when their Newborn Session takes place. There are good reasons for taking advantage of this brand new window, including that babies this young are more likely to be “curled up” and remain sleepy for the duration of the session. They are much more tolerant of being posed and moved around than a 3 or 4 week old. If your baby is older than 5-10 days, don’t worry – we can still do your session and get beautiful images! It may just take more time and effort, and we may need to skip some of the poses you see on the website.
How do I book a session when I don’t know when baby will be born?
We book a date based on baby’s due date, and then simply adjust that when baby is born so we can get them in the studio before they’re 10 days old. We are quite often one of the first phone calls or emails mom and dad send out announcing baby’s arrival :)
That being said, it’s critical that parents let me know within the first few days of baby’s birth so we can schedule them in. If they do not let me know by the time baby is 5 days old at the latest, I cannot guarantee getting them in before baby is 10 days old.
How long is a Newborn Session?
Newborn sessions often run long due to the nature and frequent nurturing of the infant. Expect a minimum of 2-3 hours. I do not rush the session, I let baby take as many breaks as needed. Baby’s comfort and safety is my number one priority.
How long is the process from start to finish?
- 2 weeks to several months – booking, planning, and getting ready for the session.
- 1-4 hours – the session itself
- Up to 4 weeks after the session, you’ll receive your images!
- 1-4 weeks after that – design work, revisions, & organizing your final order
- And then 1-4 weeks after all design work/revisions are done, you should receive any remaining shipments.
Can I bring something special to the session?
Yes! If you have a family heirloom or special item that you would like to include and remember, bring it and we will incorporate it into one of the poses.
Can siblings and parents be in a few shots?
Yes! I do recommend that siblings, come the last 30-60 minutes of the session . The session does last a few hours and little ones tend to get cranky having to wait around (my little one would too!)
Is it safe to do Newborn photos?
As a mom of 3 beautiful kids (and 6 nieces and nephews), and photographer to hundreds of babies who have been through the studio since I began, I know all about babies! My passion for motherhood and birth means that I am well education in all things mama and baby, and I continue to further my education in these things. My specialized training in Newborn Photography also means that I know the techniques and methods to safely getting the beautiful images you see on my website. Safety is the number one priority, and not everything is as it seems ;) Some images are composites (2 images edited and joined together in Photoshop) and there is *always* a spotter near the baby to keep him/her comfy and safe.
Reviews on my work and technique include recommendations from people like Ana Brandt, who is a photographer to celebrity’s babies in CA, as well as midwives and mamas.
How will I know what to bring?
After you have booked your appointment, I will send you all the info you need to prepare for your session, from What to Wear, to what to bring, what NOT to eat in the 48 hours before the session if you’re nursing, and more.
How much does it cost?
The cost for each type of session can be found on the relevant information page, at the bottom of the page.
I’m nervous about dealing with the digital files. Will you tell me how to print them and where to go to get prints made?
No need to worry at all! I provide simple instructions along with my personal printer recommendations on your image USB/thumb drive.
How long do you retain the digital negatives for my images?
Any unordered images will be deleted six months after your order is finalized.
Do you photograph births or offer birth photography?
Yes, I do. Information can be found HERE.
